About three weeks ago I bought a 1987 Porsche 924s, on eBay no less, to work on as a “project car” to fix up.

The car was located in Pennsylvania at a wholesaler and I had it shipped to Tennessee, where it arrived Friday, February 12th.

I am a casual car tinkerer, doing pretty minor stuff like oil changes and the odd cosmetic job. I have a 1997 Subaru Outback that I have changed the radiator on, an old Pontiac in high school I changed the water pump on, etc, but generally haven’t made time to do much car work myself.

But for the last year I have been addicted to HD Theater’s “Wheeler Dealers” program, where a pair of Brits find and fix up an old car each week and try to do it as inexpensively as possible. They make it look pretty easy, but then they have all the right tools, a nice lift, and so on.

They did a show about fixing up a 924 and several points came up. They say the cars are mechanically pretty bulletproof and talked about what to look for when buying one. 924’s were introduced when I was in high school and naturally I thought they were pretty cool.

So I decided to take the plunge and find one that seemed to be in fairly good condition (subjective to be sure) and hopefully I have picked a winner. It’s not easy to buy and ship a car across the country sight unseen. You have to assume the sellers are being generous in their descriptions.

But I was willing to take a chance, and this blog will chronicle our progress. My 17-year old son is helping in the process, especially since I told him that he has to earn driving time with work time on the car.
