After reading the long-awaited manual, it turns out there is an idiot light in the left gauge to warn you that you are about to run out of gas. I can’t think of a car in the last twenty or so years that doesn’t have one of these, but of course I didn’t know the 924 had one until I got the manual…

I seem to remember checking that bulb when I had the instrument cluster apart a few weeks ago, but didn’t know what it was for.

The gas tank is constructed in such a way that there is a small “bubble” sort of area at the bottom rear where the fuel pump connects in. This area is the reserve fuel reservoir, and I think I read it contains about 1.6 gallons. The theory is, when your fuel level drops to where it is all contained in that reserve area, the idiot light comes on.

So naturally, now that I knew there was one I had to see if it worked.

To check this out, all you have to do is try to run out of gas.

Naturally I was a little nervous about this, since the gas gauge tends to bounce around some and I sort of figured it wasn’t entirely accurate.

But it worked out OK. The light came on about the time the needle hit the red zone. So one more thing confirmed working is good.
